My story started, as do so many, with the offhand comment “Hey Doc, it’s getting harder to pee…” Instead of “that happens when you get older…” (not my favorite expression either from a doctor) I got “you have a tumor”, followed quickly by “you have bladder cancer”. In January of 2021 I had several cystoscopic TURBTs and a full course of BCG, followed by a third cystoscopy with TURBT and ultimately a Radical Cystectomy with Continent Urinary Bypass, Neobladder. That’s the insurance shorthand of my year, but how did I get through it? By connecting one on one with people who had been through what I was going though. Gaining strength through our conversations to face my fears and concerns. I created this bladder cancer support group to share my story, and create a place where we all might help each other one conversation at a time.
